Of the five steps in a participatory design process, three are described below.
Steps 2 and 3 - Fact finding and Generating Design Ideas

Potential end users of Elmhurst Park were surveyed about the park's design. They were asked about the types of activities they wanted to see in the park and whether they preferred a passive or active park. Their answers were tallied and are available through the following link:

Survey Results for Elmhurst Park (Word document)

Open Road used this survey to generate moveable model templates that reflect the residents' design ideas. These templates were used by the residents in step four of the PD process, creating a design.

Step 4 - Creating a Design

1. Community Meeting on Design of Spencer-Whitfield and Elmhurst Park (August 22nd, 2003) - Codman Square Health Center

Flyers for the meeting were posted in public places at least one week before the 22nd of August. See flyer.

On this day, Codman Square residents, TPL, and Open Road met at Codman Square Health Center to create designs for Spencer-Whitfield Park and Elmhurst Park. Participants were divided into four groups, three which created designs for Elmhurst Park by playing a model design game developed by Open Road. In the game, participants moved model templates that represent design ideas over a base map of the park. This allowed them to use information about the park and community to create thoughtful designs, which were photographed and reviewed by the architect.

The following documents are available: names of participants; activity plan

From Aug 22nd, photos and descriptions of the designs for each group:

Group 2: Darlene Freeman, William Freeman, Lisa Davis, Nancy Kafka, Jake Li

Group 3: Paul Malkemes, Edith Pegues, Bart Uchida, Donald Reid, Rosanne Foley

Group 4: Sonja Johanssen, Erica Freeman, Shaniqua Bowman, Daria Ovide, Cagatay Ozkul

Andria Post and Paula Hewitt were moving among groups.

2. Community Meeting on Design of Spencer-Whitfield and Elmhurst Park (Oct 4th, 2003)

Between August 23rd and September 30th, the landscape architect, Sonja Johanssen, reviewed and commented on the designs. On the 30th, team members reviewed Sonja's comments on their designs. Using a worksheet, they dicussed their design priorities and whether they agreed with Sonja's comments. Their input was present on October 4th at the meeting.

The following documents are available: architect's comments on designs; residents' comments on architect's comments

3. The Final Design

A final schematic design (December 2003) is available: Schematic Design
